Inspired by the San Francisco Parklet scheme, Map Projects was asked to design these small, originally designed to fit within one parking space, modular gardens and respond to their immediate surroundings and site conditions.
The parklets were an opportunity for us to engage fully with the community on a micro level and with the city as a whole on a macro level, contributing to the urban scheme. It was also a way for us to work with one of our recurring materials: plants.
As always, the choice of materials used was of paramount importance. In this case, rather than mould the material to suit our purposes, we let the material dictate and lead the shapes and texture in the final design, ascribing a certain elegance to the constituent elements not for their flawlessness, but for their graciousness in ageing.
